Over There, the first American TV series about an ongoing U.S. war, was snuffed out last October after just three months and 13 episodes. And rightly so. Don’t get me wrong. This was a grade A show, taut and intelligent and full of surprises until the last minute. But the timing sucked.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t make myself like Tour of Duty, the cult TV series chronicling the exploits of a U.S. infantry platoon in Vietnam. The show, which aired for three seasons from 1987 to 1990, is now available on DVD, but frankly, I’m having trouble just slogging through Season 1.
