Dishonourable Discharge

I so wanted this not to happen. Alas, it did: after five impressive seasons, television’s best spy series Alias went out not with a bang but with a whimper. In fact, after slogging through the tortuously anemic season 5, just out on DVD, I no longer blame ABC for ditching the show. It soon becomes [...]

I See Dead People

As Jack Bauer sinks deeper into his own private hell, Fox executes a political about turn with Season 5 of 24, just out on DVD. If you ask me, it was high time. Ever since Day 2, when the series jumped on the Bush bandwagon, I’ve had serious issues with its politics. I’ve dwelled on [...]

Down the Hatch

I’ve just watched the first half of Season 2 of Lost, now out on DVD, and although I’m not in the habit of jumping into conclusions based on hasty impressions (yeah, right…), a few notes are in order. First, let me congratulate the good folks at Buena Vista for the brilliant idea of splitting up [...]

Brought Back

Call me a sucker, but I think The 4400 is shaping up to be a helluva show. What at first seemed like a soapy Taken ripoff — as in, Brought Back — turned into a minor sci-fi classic during its second season, which is now out on DVD. It’s not just that the writing is [...]

Oops, wrong reality

Seen Munich yet? Ever wonder where Spielberg got the idea to stage the opening attack the way he did? I’ll tell you where. He lifted it from a 20-year-old TV movie — almost shot by shot.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t make myself like Tour of Duty, the cult TV series chronicling the exploits of a U.S. infantry platoon in Vietnam. The show, which aired for three seasons from 1987 to 1990, is now available on DVD, but frankly, I’m having trouble just slogging through Season 1.

Bye bye, Bristow

Bastards. There I was, happily gorging my way through Season 4 of Alias, just out on DVD, when word came from ABC that come May, the show will be scrapped. Well. What a nice Christmas present. Thank you ever so much.

Lost, now on its second season, must be the unlikeliest success story in modern television history. Think about it: a bunch of plane crash survivors struggling to stay alive on a tropical island, with dream-like flashbacks occupying half of the screen time and the central mystery — who the fuck is playing cat and mouse [...]

The fourth season of 24, just out on DVD, left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling and a cold sweat, all at the same time. I loved the storyline, the characters, the cliffhangers and sudden gusts of cinematic energy. And I hated the politics. They fucking stink.
